Abhishekam- Sacred Ritual of purification
Abhishekam is a spiritual ritual performed to connect with the divine, receive blessings, and achieve purification. This religious practice involves specific procedures that vary based on traditions and customs.
What is Abhishekam?
“Abhishekam,” from the Sanskrit words meaning “wetting” or “sprinkling,” describes the sacred bathing of a deity in its original form. This ritual is thought to purify the deity and, by extension, the inner being of those involved.
Process of an Abhishekam:
A trained priest or qualified individual performs Abhishekam, bathing the deity with chosen liquids while chanting prayers and mantras. The deity is then adorned with clothes, flowers, and ornaments. Each product used for Abhishekam has its own significance. Some special and frequently used ones are:
- Watersymbolizes purity and life.
- Milkrepresents prosperity and nourishment.
- Gheesignifies auspiciousness and purity.
- Yogurt is associated with good health and well-being.
- Honeyembodies sweetness and divine love.
- Panchamritam(5-mix concoction), a mixture of milk, yogurt/banana, ghee, honey, and jaggery, represents the five elements of nature.
- Sandalwood pastesignifies fragrance, cooling nature, and purity.
Many other elements like fruit juices, oils, coconut water, cow urine, Vibhuti (sacred ash), rose water, can also be used for Abhishekam.
Variations in Abhishekam:
Abhishekams are performed for various purposes, intentions and deities. An exhaustive list cannot be created. Some special notable examples are:
- Kumbhabhishekam (A consecration ritual for a newly built Hindu temple)
- Rudrabhishekam (for Lord Shiva)
- Lakshmi Abhishekam (for Goddess Lakshmi)
